Job Description: Overall Description:

The main role of the Leader Teacher is to demonstrate thorough curriculum knowledge and provide strong academic
leadership. The Lead Teacher is required to lead, manage and develop the department to ensure it achieves excellence
in standards of teaching and learning. The Lead Teacher must oversee, motivate and build the skills of team members
to align with the requirements set by the School’s Leadership. The Lead Teacher must actively contribute to wider
school development and growth. This position involves 0.2 administrative responsibilities. Thus, an Lead Teacher also
has to fulfil the duties of a Secondary Teacher.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Ensure the department teaches based on the YCEF Curriculum Guidelines.
• Assist the department to collaboratively plan and prepare lessons in advance, and align vertical planning to show
content/skill progressions throughout year levels.
• Guide the department to carry out the school’s assessment procedures and marking policies.
• Ensure the department records and reports on the development, progress and attainment of pupils, including
initiating meetings with parents to discuss attainment and progress.
• Create a harmonious working group within the department and foster its development.
• Monitor and appraise staff performance.
• Mentor and support colleagues, including through demonstrating model lessons.
• Ensure class discipline by colleagues, while promoting the general well-being of pupils.
• Promote developments by staying current in own field of knowledge.
• Build capacity within the departmental team, as applicable, and advise on individual staff PD.
• Safeguard the welfare of all pupils that fall under your responsibility or that you come into contact with.
• Assist in the teaching allocations for staff, according to class needs.
• Induct and support new colleagues or supply teachers in the subject, as required.
• Manage setting/streaming in the subject, if applicable.
• Seek out useful curriculum teaching resources to share with the department.
• Attend and contribute to weekly Leaders meetings.
• Oversee all aspects of internal and external assessment in the department, including liaison with respective
Coordinators as appropriate.
• Ensure the Department’s compliance of external assessment with respective exam board regulations.
• Manage all aspects of assessment and reporting, including ensuring adequate records of attainment are kept and
that moderation is used for promoting consistency.
• Creation and monitoring of the Department’s budget, including overseas and local orders.
• Maintain the general resources (and facilities) of the Department to a high standard.
• Promote the department though updating corridor and classroom displays, and Yearbook pages.
• Take a leading role in coordinating all aspects of departmental co-curricular activities (CCAs).
• Organizing and leading special curriculum related events and days.
• Overseeing the organization of field trips and competitions across year levels to promote the curriculum.
• Supporting marketing communication through newsletter and magazine articles.
• Assist in the production and updating of Secondary handbooks, as applicable and appropriate.
• Assist to coordinate work for an absent colleague in the subject, as applicable.
These duties may be amended to meet the changing demands of the school at the discretion of the School Leadership
Team and following consultation with the Head of Secondary.

Professional Development:

As a reflective learner who takes responsibility for their professional development and progression (taking into account
the school’s priorities and their own professional needs), a Lead Teacher is expected to make full use of the
opportunities and training provided by the school.


There will be an annual review undertaken by the Head of Secondary (in consultation with SLT).
Performance will be measured against the skills and responsibilities (including the qualities listed above) and specific
targets negotiated annually as part of performance management.
