Job Description: |
EAL Teacher Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Supports the Organisation’s Mission, Principles and Practices • Reviews new student records to identify students who need EAL support • In collaboration with Admissions personnel, assesses new students on entry and recommends placement into English courses • Carries out classroom observation and scrutiny of work when required to identify and monitor EAL students • Models the skills and attitudes of a global citizen by seeking to understand and respond positively to the cultural differences in value systems and societal norms of the EAL students and their families • Supports parents in gaining access to information on their child’s EAL needs and encourages the development of the mother tongue/home language(s) • Maintains an EAL register and shares this with the School Leadership Team and Head of Department • Writes and maintains reports on EAL students • Plans, assesses and supports students’ learning and progress with regard to the school’s policies, curriculum requirements, plus monitoring and tracking data • Provides professional guidance to colleagues, through written advice, meetings and/or training, to promote appropriate learning programmes for EAL students • Manages and evaluates EAL programmes throughout the year • Provides in-class and/or withdrawal support for EAL students • Provides learning strategies and resources for EAL students • Assists with modification of assessments where appropriate • Provides examination/test assistance for EAL students where needed • Liaises with other schools to ensure continuity of support and learning when transferring EAL students • Manages appropriate EAL resources to ensure they are used efficiently, effectively and safely • Orders resources to support curriculum plan and learning needs of EAL students
General Skills, Qualifications and Expectations: • Holds the minimum requirement of a Bachelor Degree plus relevant teaching and EAL credentials • Shows evidence of active participation in continuing professional development • Has a minimum of 2 years full-time teaching in a school setting • Has experience working with students with diverse needs in a school setting • Has a positive, energetic, enthusiastic and solution focused outlook • Has a deep understanding of highly effective teaching and learning practices • Has significant depth, breadth of knowledge, skills and understanding of their specific discipline and also a passion that inspires students to achieve at the highest level and colleagues to learn more • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills and understands the value of generating positive professional relationships and partnerships with colleagues, students, parents/families and the wider school community • Can work in a highly collaborative learning and organisational culture which values a team approach when planning and providing learning experiences which are engaging, challenging, supportive and inclusive • Ensures that formative and summative feedback to students is timely and constructive • Has the ability to set clear and appropriate targets for student attainment by making use of formative and summative assessment data • Empowers students to take ownership of their learning and goal setting • Can work closely with teachers and assistants in ensuring that suitably differentiated material and learning pathways are provided to challenge all students regardless of ability • Embraces innovative change in pedagogy • Has a commitment to operate successfully in a bilingual teaching environment in which important Chinese and Western cultural characteristics are understood and respected. • Has the ability to make good use of technology as a learning resource and for professional practice • Supports and applies all school policies consistently • Consults with the School Leadership Team (SLT) and/or Child Protection Team as appropriate and necessary in matters affecting the welfare and safeguarding of students. • Contributes to the school’s extracurricular/ enrichment programmes and to the wider school development and growth |
