Job Description: The Secondary Head of Department provides professional curriculum leadership and management for particular subject areas to secure high quality teaching, effective use of resources and improved standards of learning and achievement for all students. These roles and responsibilities are in addition to teaching load. Heads of Department are responsible to the relevant curriculum coordinators, Head of Secondary, Co-Principals and are under their supervision.
Have knowledge and understanding of:
• The school’s mission, principles, practices and action plans
• The relationship of the subject area(s) to the whole school
• Any school curriculum requirements and the requirements for assessment, recording and reporting of students’ attainment and progress
• The characteristics of high-quality teaching and the main strategies for improving and sustaining high standards of teaching, learning and achievement for all pupils
• Management structure and procedures
• The implications of special educational needs (SEN), gifted and talented needs, EAL, differentiation, enquiry methodology and ICT for teaching and learning
• As a senior member of staff, take a full part in the formulation and implementation of school policy and in the whole life of the school


Planning and setting expectations:
• Set expectations for staff and students in relation to standards of student achievement and the quality of teaching.
• Work with any specialist staff for expertise, to ensure teaching is set to match with students’ needs.
• Liaise closely with the staff in charge of timetable with regards to the allocation of curriculum time to the subject area(s), and also with regard to the assignment of appropriate staff to assigned teaching courses.
• Establish, with the involvement of the relevant staff, short, medium and long-term plans for the development and resourcing of the subject group team
• Contribute to whole-school aims, policies, guidelines and practices including those in relation to behaviour, discipline, bullying and harassment.
• Identify realistic and challenging targets for improvement, vision and action that is to be taken, timescales and criteria for success

Teaching and managing student learning:
• Plan, implement and review the curriculum within the framework of YCEF, IGCSE and IB programmes, the school’s policies and develop the curriculums in the subject area(s) to meet the needs of our students.
• Curriculum coverage, continuity and progression in all areas for all students, including those of high ability and those with special educational or linguistic needs
• Ensure teachers are clear about the teaching of objectives in lessons, understand the sequence of teaching and learning in the subject area(s), and communicate such information to students
• Guidance is provided on the choice of appropriate teaching and learning methods to meet the needs of the subject and of different students
• Effective development of students’ literacy, numeracy and information technology skills across the relevant subject areas
• Contribute to teaching within the subject area(s) and to the life of the school, including assemblies, when necessary.
• Be aware of the contribution to students’ understanding of the duties, opportunities, responsibilities and rights of citizens
• Effective development of students’ individual and collaborative approaches to learning skills necessary for them to become increasingly independent when out of school

Assessment and evaluation:
• Analyse and interpret relevant national, local and school data, research evidence to inform policies, guidelines, practices, expectations and teaching methods
• Establish and implement clear practices for assessing, recording and reporting on student achievement, and for using this information to recognise achievement and to assist students in setting targets for further improvement
• Ensure that information about students’ achievements in previous classes and schools is used effectively to secure good progress in the year group
• Ensure that students’ work is regularly assessed, and their achievements recorded
• Evaluate teaching across the year groups and subjects; use this analysis to identify effective practice and areas for improvement and take action to improve the quality of teaching
• Liaise with the school’s IGCSE and IBDP Coordinators in charge of examinations over entries for IGCSE, IBDP and other examinations
• Assess prospective student admission placement tests

Relations with parents and wider community:
• Develop effective links with the local community, in order to extend the subject area(s), enhance teaching and develop the students’ wider understanding
• Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with parents, Directors, external agencies and the wider community

Managing own performance and development:
• Prioritise and manage own time effectively, particularly in relation to balancing the demands made by teaching, departmental management and involvement in school development
• Take responsibility for your own professional development

Managing and developing staff and other adults:
• Help staff to achieve constructive working relationships with students
• Establish clear expectations and constructive working relationships among staff, including through team working and mutual support; devolving responsibilities and delegating tasks, appropriate evaluating practice, and developing an acceptance of accountability
• Oversee the professional development of departmental staff members through a process of guidance, delegating and consultation, take part in appraisal arrangements and in the review process leading to the preparation of the school’s action plan.
• Chair regular departmental team meetings as directed within the school‘s time allocation and ensure that minutes are taken and distributed.
• Support members of the department who may be having issues with individual students or classes; ensure student discipline is maintained in order to establish lessons that are meaningful and that effective learning can take place.
• Oversee the work of teaching and non-teaching staff assigned to the subject area(s) and advise and assist the Head of Secondary and Co-Principals in matters of staff appointments and appraisal.
• Ensure that new teachers are appropriately mentored, monitored, supported and assessed in relation to curriculum needs and administrative procedures
• When necessary, lead professional development

Managing resources:
• Establish staff and resource needs and advise the Head of Secondary and Co-Principals of likely priorities for expenditure; allocate available resources with maximum efficiency to meet the objectives of the school and curriculum in the subject area(s)
• Ensure the effective and efficient management and organisation of learning resources, including information and communications technology
• Plan to meet the future needs of the expanding school in terms of space, staffing, and equipment

Strategic Leadership:
• Create a climate which enables other staff to develop & maintain positive attitudes towards the departmental team & confidence in teaching within it
• Ensure that there are equal opportunities for all

Job Requirements: This position includes teaching of IGCSE English Language/EAL and Literature courses and may include IB Diploma and some Lower Secondary classes as well depending on assignments within the department. Please see attached head of department job description.

• Holder of Bachelor Degree in relevant subject with teaching certificate or license
• Experience working with a diverse group of students and faculty members
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build professional teams and collegial relationships
