Job Title: EAL Teacher (YCIS-BJ-1920-SEC005)
Posted Date: 11/21/2018 Expiration Date: -
Location: YCIS - Beijing (Beijing SEC) # of Openings: 2
Effective From: Other(08/01/2019)
Job Description: We have a vibrant team of English teachers who work collaboratively to deliver the YCIS curriculum, IGCSE and IB programmes, in an engaging and stimulating manner. All YCIS schools are responsible for utilising the YCIS Curriculum Framework, including the essential knowledge, skills, concepts and enduring understandings, to develop their own school-based curriculum. At YCIS Beijing, the English department has been aligning the order and content of our Humanities curriculum to match the skills development required for successful transition to IGCSE, across the whole of the Lower Secondary. All units are planned collectively using Understanding by Design (UbD) principles, with a view to creating opportunities for Project Based Learning (PBL).

The Secondary English department at YCIS contains numerous course options, and students with a wide range of English language abilities are represented across all year levels. Teachers typically teach across the curriculum and grade levels, which allows for team planning and an atmosphere of collaboration and collegiality. This also allows teachers opportunities to gain valuable work experience teaching internationally recognised courses such as the IBDP and IGCSE. Class sizes are small, with classes ranging from 10-18 in Lower Secondary, to as little as 4-10 in in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. English Classes are divided among three distinct grade levels: Lower Secondary in years 7, 8, and 9; IGCSE in years 10 and 11, and the International Baccalaureate Program in years 12 and 13.

In Lower Secondary, English classes are streamed according to a student’s level of English ability in the areas of writing, reading, speaking and listening. These classes include: EIP, EAL, and Language and Literature. Students are placed in classes according to standardised language testing results and through conference with teachers and parents. Students who are learning English as an additional language at a beginner’s level are placed in the English Intensive Program (EIP). Class sizes are small in EIP, and more personalised teacher-student interaction allows for faster language acquisition. Students typically move fairly quickly from this class to the English as an Additional Language program (EAL), which has the mainstream curriculum differentiated to better suit the needs of English language learners. For such learners, this year we have introduced an English Support programme, where teachers from other disciplines can request the assistance of our English Support teacher to co-plan and deliver lessons, to make them more accessible to all learners.

The English Language and Literature class is the mainstream class at YCIS, and is based on the National Curriculum for England modified to align with the schools philosophy and objectives and the needs of international learners. These courses help prepare students for the IGCSE and allow them to become effective communicators through an emphasis on writing composition, and reading for understanding.

In IGCSE, courses offered include: Second Language English, First Language English Core, and First Language English with World Literature. The IGCSE is well-established and structured program that is internationally recognised as one of the most widely used in the world. Exams for these subjects occur once a semester starting in year 10 to prepare students for a final, externally-assessed examination at the end of year 11.

IBDP, courses offered include: English Language and Literature (HL or SL), English Literature (HL or SL) and English B (HL or SL). The latter is typically chosen by those who speak English as an additional language, whereas the first two are for those with native or near native English skills, or have spent considerable time in an English-speaking international school environment.

Our school contains a well-resourced library, and many English extracurricular activities for students to participate in, including: speech and debate competitions, poetry week, poetry slams, reading challenges, Battle of the Books, a creative writing group, and a student literary magazine. There are also many opportunities for students to have their work published in external youth-centered publications.
