Overall Description:
The main role of the Director of Performing Arts is twofold: to provide dynamic leadership and operational management for the school's extensive performance programme, and to deliver high-quality music education. This combined role encompasses all major productions, concerts, and external performance events, alongside teaching music within the school's curriculum. The Director is responsible for the quality of the performance programme, the management of technical resources, the line management of the IIIP team and technical staff, and the effective delivery of the music curriculum. This position involves significant administrative and teaching responsibilities and requires excellent communication skills to liaise effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Performance and Production Management:
• Lead, manage, and deliver all major school performance events, including the annual school musical production, seasonal concerts, recitals, and showcases.
• Manage the quality and scope of the performance programme, ensuring a wide range of opportunities for students to perform on stage.
• Source, manage, and oversee visiting professionals and Artists in Residence to enrich the student experience.
• Coordinate and manage external performance events, such as community performances and off-site Christmas events.

People Management:
• Oversee and line manage the IIIP (Instrumental & Vocal Instruction Programme) team, including the IIIP Coordinator and all peripatetic music teachers.
• Line manage the Sound and Light Technician, ensuring high-quality technical support for all events.
• Monitor, appraise, and support the professional development of direct reports.
• Induct and support new peripatetic teachers and technical staff.

Operational and Resource Management:
• Maintain and manage the quality and inventory of all performance equipment in the auditorium and other performance areas.
• Create and monitor the Performance Programme’s budget.
• Maintain the general resources and facilities of the performance areas to a high standard.
• Promote the performance programme through updating displays and Yearbook pages.
• Take a leading role in coordinating performance-based co-curricular activities (CCAs).
• Organise and lead special performance-related events and days.
• Oversee the organisation of performance trips and external competitions.
• Support marketing communications through newsletter and magazine articles.

Teaching and Curriculum (Music):
• Deliver the Music learning programmes according to the needs of students (group and individual) in line with the YCIS International Curriculum, IGCSE and IB Diploma as appropriate.
• Develop/refine music curriculum documentation and assessment tasks in line with the YCIS International Curriculum, IGCSE and IB Diploma as appropriate.
• Support, motivate and advise other teachers, and work alongside them in the integration of music within the Learning Community model as appropriate.
• Compile and work within the budget allocated to Music, and prioritise resource needs appropriately.
Maintain the inventory to meet the needs of the Music curriculum.
• Support the co-curricular music programme through involvement in Co-Curricular Activities (CCA), as required.
• Prepare students for key performances.
• Coordinate within the Performing Arts team, the development of a cohesive and effective long-term plan in Music.
• Fulfill the standard teaching requirement of 25 periods per week (pro-rated for the 0.5 teaching component).

Stakeholder Communication and Liaison:
• Serve as the primary point of contact for all performing arts matters, liaising and communicating effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including School Leadership Team (SLT), headquarters staff, colleagues across the YCYW network, external professionals, and internal teaching and administrative staff.
• Maintain clear, consistent, and timely communication with the SLT regarding all upcoming productions, concerts, and major developments
• Provide regular reports to the SLT on the programme’s progress, impact, and challenges and engage Heads of Section in the planning of upcoming events
Job Requirements: Education & Certification:
• Master’s degree in Performing Arts, Arts Education, Music, or a related field is preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in Music, Drama, or a related field is required.
• Recognised teaching qualification and certification.

Experience:
• Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in performing arts/music, with at least 2 years in a leadership role (e.g., Department Head, Production Director, Head of Music).
• Extensive experience in directing, producing, and managing a wide range of performances, including:
• Musical concerts (e.g., choral, instrumental, orchestral, band).
• Theatrical productions (e.g., plays, musicals, one-act festivals).
• Proven experience teaching music curriculum at secondary level; specific experience with IGCSE and IB Diploma Music programmes is highly preferred.
• Experience in curriculum development, staff mentoring, and budget management.

Skills & Competencies:
• Proficiency in playing at least one musical instrument is essential.
• Strong leadership and personnel management abilities.
• Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of technical production, including sound, lighting, and stage management.
• A passion for fostering a collaborative and inclusive arts community.

These duties may be amended to meet the changing demands of the school at the discretion of the School Leadership Team.
