Job Description: Context

The Head of Learning (HoL) for Secondary is a member of the Campus Leadership Team (CLT). She / He is responsible for the strategic planning and delivery of the Secondary Learning Programme. The HoL reports to the Vice Principal and leads the Heads of Department in curriculum and assessment development.

Personal & Professional Qualities of the Head of Learning
The Head of Learning is a flexible, forward thinking instructional leader. The HoL has significant experience and proven success in international school leadership. The position includes a part-time teaching role in his / her subject qualification and experience. The HoL needs to possess and demonstrate the following characteristics:
• Experience with the IGCSE / IB Diploma programmes both as a teacher and leader.
• Ability to teach at the IGCSE / IBDP level in one of the subjects offered at the school.
• A proven record of successfully managing academic programmes.
• An ability to motivate, coach and mentor staff and the personality to relate comfortably and work effectively with the rest of the CLT, HODs, teachers and non-teaching staff.
• Proven confident and engaging presentation skills.
• Evidence of international mindedness.
• An organized, focused and goal-orientated personality capable of innovative forward thinking.
• Ability to manage time effectively.
• High levels of personal integrity.
• An ability to generate ideas and implement new programmes and systems.
• A willingness and ability to take independent decisions when warranted.
• Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English.
• Demonstrable understanding of ethical and reputational issues.
• Evidence of a capacity to operate effectively in a cross-cultural environment.
• A relevant post-graduate degree in education.
• High levels of computer literacy.
• Demonstrates energy and enthusiasm

Responsible to: the Vice Principal


Line Manager for: HODs, Learning Support Teacher(s), Learning Assistants, Professional Development Coordinator, School Librarian, Co-Curricular Coordinator, and temporary support staff engaged to deliver education and community projects.
Main Purpose of the Role of Head of Learning in Secondary

The Head of Learning is responsible for the vision, development, management and monitoring of the School’s Secondary Learning Programmes as directed by the Vice Principal, including the review, design and implementation of the school curriculum. Assessment analysis to inform curriculum design and pedagogical approach is a key role for the Head of Learning.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Strategically plan, coordinate and oversee the delivery of YCIS’s learning programmes throughout the Secondary School.
• Oversee the annual analysis of IGCSE and IBDP results and the subsequent development, implementation and monitoring of school wide and departmental improvement plans.
• Work with the HODs to set and manage department meeting agendas and budgets as directed by the campus principals.
• In partnership with the campus principals, recruit and manage the departments through the annual Performance Review process.
• Observe lessons and provide feedback for improvement, undertake appraisals and offer continuing professional development to staff.
• Work with CLT and HODs to ensure the School has clear learning outcomes linked to curriculum objectives, including designing professional training workshops that further support the strategic plan linked to student learning.
• Monitor and develop the school’s learning resources to ensure they are of a consistent high standard and link to appropriate curriculum areas.
• Work with Section Coordinators, ensure that teachers are informed about curriculum and assessment requirements for their subjects and that they have access to relevant resource materials.
• Work closely with Primary Curriculum Leaders to ensure vertical articulation between the learning programmes across Primary and Lower Secondary
• Provide management and leadership of the HODs and the school librarian.
• Oversee the review and implementation of the Section Handbooks, and ensure that all conditions for the conduct of examinations are fulfilled.
• Oversee IGCSE and IBDP exam schedules and schedule the Semester Examination timetable.
• Coordinate the daily teacher absence and the internal / external supply teacher needs.
• Support and coordinate regular external reviews by external accrediting organisations such as IB, IGCSE and CIS / NEASC / NCCT.
• Collate appropriate assessment statistics and write reports for strategic planning relating to student learning.
• Act as a spokesperson for YCIS as delegated at conferences, in PLC groups, and through written articles; promoting the school’s work through effective advocacy at individual and local levels.
• With the support of Marketing, ensure that these programmes are marketed to the school community in a timely and effective manner.
• Take on any other duties as instructed by the school’s principals.
